Detailed guide – Tandem paragliding at FLY ROYAL on the Tegelberg in the Allgäu

1. personal requirements

Tandem paragliding is an accessible experience for almost everyone. The following information will help you to check your suitability and prepare for your flight in the best possible way.

Flying without prior knowledge & physical fitness

You don’t need any previous experience for a tandem paragliding flight. Your experienced pilot will take full control of the paraglider. Before take-off, you will receive detailed instructions on how to take off and land correctly. A healthy physical condition is a prerequisite, as the take-off requires active body tension and dynamic running steps on sloping terrain. You should be able to run about ten strong steps downhill while the glider is inflating.

Weight limits & safety aspects

Your body weight must be between 30 kg and 90 kg. These limits are binding for safety reasons and ensure optimum flight performance of the tandem equipment. Failure to comply with the weight limits will invalidate your right to participate. The weight check is carried out discreetly and professionally on site. Please state your weight truthfully when booking so that we can prepare the right equipment for you.

Age groups: Children, teenagers & seniors

Participation is possible from a body weight of 30 kg, which usually corresponds to an age of around 6-7 years. Passengers under 45 kg only fly in the morning due to the calmer and gentler air conditions. Minors require a written declaration of consent from their legal guardians. The approved age limit for senior citizens is 75 years. Flights are also possible beyond this age if you are in good physical condition and after personal consultation – also via WhatsApp short video to assess your mobility.

Special concerns: Travel sickness & fear of heights

If you are prone to travel sickness, we recommend a morning appointment, as the air conditions are particularly gentle and calm then. Travel tablets can also be helpful – take them around 30 minutes before the flight. Avoid heavy meals and prefer light food. Inform your pilot in advance about your sensitivity so that he can adjust your flying style accordingly. However, fear of heights is not a problem when paragliding: As there is no direct connection to the ground and you sit comfortably in the harness, there is no feeling of vertigo. The experience is also suitable for people with a pronounced fear of heights.

2. booking

Booking your tandem paragliding flight is straightforward and flexible. We offer various booking methods so that you can choose the most convenient option for you.

How to book your flight

Online booking: Use our 24/7 real-time calendar on our website. Bookings are possible up to one hour before the desired date. Written request: Send us your request by email or WhatsApp with your preferred dates. We will get back to you promptly with specific date suggestions. On-site booking: Visit us directly at the Fly Royal base at the Tegelberg landing site in good flying weather. Last minute bookings: For spontaneous requests on the same day, the best way to reach us is by phone.

Your choice: morning or afternoon

Morning flights offer gentle and calm conditions – the best time for connoisseurs and passengers who like to relax. You glide through stable air in mostly light winds, with minimal movement of the glider. Afternoon flights, on the other hand, are the active time of the day. Thermal updrafts often enable extended high-altitude flights and provide a sporty, dynamic flying experience with more movement in the glider. Both options have their own special appeal – choose according to your personal preference.

Planning tips for your booking

In the high season from June to September, dates are often fully booked several days in advance. We therefore recommend booking early, especially at weekends and on public holidays. Ideally, vacation guests should book one of the first days of their vacation – this leaves enough time for an alternative date before departure in the event of unfavourable weather conditions. For groups and families: Up to four flights per time slot are possible at the same time. We divide larger groups into consecutive flight rounds so that everyone can fly in a relaxed manner.

3. cancellation

We understand that plans can change. Our cancellation policy is transparent and fair.

Cancellation by the passenger

If you cancel more than 3 days before the booked date, there is no cancellation fee and you will receive a full refund. If you cancel between 3 days and 24 hours before the date, a cancellation fee of 50% applies – you will be refunded 50% of the flight price. If you cancel less than 24 hours before the appointment, a cancellation fee of 100% will be charged and a refund will no longer be possible. To ensure that you are covered for unforeseen situations such as illness or traffic problems, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance at the time of booking.

Cancellation by FLY ROYAL

If we have to cancel your appointment – usually due to adverse weather conditions – you have the choice between a free rebooking to an alternative date or a full refund of the flight price. In this case, the flight price is not due and there are no fees. Your safety is our top priority, which is why we only fly when the weather is safe.

Repayment modalities

Refunds are generally made using the same payment method that you used for the booking. The refund will usually be visible on your account within 5-7 working days. If you have redeemed a Fly Royal value voucher and also made an additional payment, the additional payment amount will be refunded as a value voucher in the event of cancellation, which you can use for future bookings.

4. weather

Safe flying weather is the basic prerequisite for every tandem paragliding flight. We make the weather decision professionally and responsibly.

What does aviation weather mean?

We only fly in safe flying weather. The decisive factors here are wind strength and direction, thermal activity and general air stability. Sunshine alone is not an indicator of good flying weather – cloudy days are often excellent for flying. Cloud cover is generally unproblematic as long as there is no rain front or thunderstorm tendency. We do not fly in rain, thunderstorms or strong winds. Safety always comes first.

Weather check & forecast

Our experienced team analyzes current weather models, wind measurements and meteorological data on a daily basis. As precise flight weather forecasts are only reliable at short notice, we make the final decision on whether to go ahead with the flight the day before at the earliest, but usually only on the day of the flight itself. We ask for your understanding that we cannot provide individual weather information for individual dates in advance – this would multiply the effort involved and would be of limited value.

Decision on the day of the flight

If the weather forecast is positive and your appointment takes place as planned, there will be no separate confirmation. Please just show up on time at the agreed meeting point. If your appointment has to be postponed or canceled due to the weather, we will inform you in good time by e-mail, text message or telephone. In the event of a cancellation, you can choose between a free rebooking to an alternative date or a full refund of the flight price. We will endeavor to offer you a suitable alternative date as quickly as possible.

5. costs

Transparent pricing is important to us. Here you will find a complete overview of all costs incurred.

Tandem flight price & included services

The tandem flight costs 199 euros per person. The price includes the entire flight within a 90-minute time slot, the complete technical equipment (tandem paraglider, harness with protector, rescue parachute and helmet), the legally required liability insurance and, if required, free rental shoes, a windbreaker and gloves. You therefore receive an all-round carefree package and only need to bring clothing suitable for the weather.

Additional costs on site

Not included in the flight price is the cable car ticket for the ascent to the launch site. This costs 21.50 euros for adults and 8.50 euros for children. You can purchase the ticket directly from the pilot or at the cable car ticket office. You can also book our professional photo and video service on site: Photos only cost 29,- Euro, the complete package of photos and video 49,- Euro. This service cannot be booked online, but is booked and paid for directly with the pilot.

Payment options & vouchers

For payments on site, we accept cash, all major credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal via QR code. Fly Royal vouchers must be redeemed in the shopping cart when booking online – subsequent offsetting is not possible. Important note: Vouchers from third-party providers such as Jochen Schweizer, mydays or other experience portals are not accepted by us. If you have such a voucher, please contact the voucher provider directly to redeem it.

6. equipment

The right equipment contributes significantly to your comfort and safety. We provide the technical equipment, you take care of the right clothing.

Flight equipment & safety standards

The complete technical flying equipment is provided by us and meets the highest safety standards. This includes the certified tandem paraglider, an ergonomic harness with integrated back protector, a rescue parachute for absolute safety and a high-quality helmet. All components are regularly serviced and inspected and comply with the current certification guidelines for commercial tandem flight operations. You don’t have to worry about a thing – our team will equip you professionally.

Clothing & Shoes

We recommend weather-appropriate outdoor clothing based on the onion principle, i.e. several layers on top of each other. The upper body in particular should be warm and protected from the wind – a combination of a mid-layer (fleece or thin insulating jacket) and a windproof outer jacket is ideal. For your feet, you’ll need sturdy sneakers or ankle-high hiking boots that offer good grip at the start. If you don’t have suitable shoes with you, we offer free rental shoes in various sizes on site.

Sunglasses & gloves

Sunglasses are highly recommended – they protect your eyes from the intense high-altitude sun and the wind during the flight. They also make you look much cooler in selfies, even on cloudy days. We recommend gloves at any time of year, even in summer. The airstream (wind chill effect) makes it noticeably cooler in the air than on the ground. Thin fleece or softshell gloves are ideal. If you don’t have any with you, we will be happy to provide you with rental gloves.

Own cameras & technology

You may take smartphones and action cams with you, but only with a secure attachment and after consultation with your pilot. A hand strap or chest strap is mandatory. Selfie sticks are not permitted for safety reasons, nor are heavy cameras with interchangeable lenses. We recommend that you use our professional photo and video service – this way you have both hands free, enjoy the flight to the full and still receive high-quality memories in professional quality.

7th meeting point

The right meeting point is important for a smooth process. Here you can find out where we meet.

FLY ROYAL base at the Tegelberg landing site

Our meeting point is the FLY ROYAL Base & Landing Bar, located directly at the Tegelberg landing site. The address is: Tegelbergstraße 33, 87645 Schwangau. You will find us directly on the access road to the Tegelbergbahn, you can’t miss the building. Please arrive punctually at the agreed time – the booked time is the meeting time, not the start time. From here we walk together to the cable car station, which is within walking distance. If the weather is fine, our base is open and you can enjoy a coffee beforehand.

Alternative meeting point at the starting point

By prior arrangement, it is also possible to meet directly at the launch site on the Tegelberg. This is particularly suitable if you already have a cable car ticket or would like to go hiking before the flight. Please contact us by phone, email or WhatsApp at least one day before your booked date. We will then coordinate the exact meeting point and time with you. Please note that there is no checkroom or luggage storage at the starting point.

Notes on luggage & hiking equipment

Unfortunately, there is no space in the tandem paraglider for rucksacks, walking poles or other bulky items. These cannot be taken along. You can leave small valuables such as your wallet, cell phone or car keys safely with us at the base – we will keep them safe during your flight. If you are travelling with larger luggage or hiking equipment, you are responsible for organizing your own transport to the valley. Consult with accompanying persons if necessary.

8. procedure

A tandem paragliding experience involves several steps. Here you can find out what to expect.

Timing & flight duration

Allow around 1.5 hours for the whole experience. This time frame includes the meeting point, ascent with the cable car, preparation at the launch site, the flight itself and the debriefing. The pure flight time is between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the thermal conditions. In particularly good conditions with strong thermals, we like to make full use of the time window and can even fly beyond this – sometimes flights last 40 minutes or longer.

Check-In & Preparation

At the meeting point, you will get to know your pilot and can clarify any final questions. We will check together whether your clothing and shoes are suitable and provide you with rental equipment if required. You can leave your luggage safely with us at the base. We will then walk together to the Tegelbergbahn valley station, which is within walking distance. You can purchase your cable car ticket either directly from your pilot or at the ticket office. Your pilot will be happy to answer your questions during the 10-minute ascent.

Create briefing & equipment

Once you arrive at the launch site on the Tegelberg, you will receive a detailed briefing on the launch procedure. Your pilot will explain to you exactly when and how you have to run and what position you should take. We put on the equipment together: Harness, helmet and any additional clothing. Then we practise the take-off procedure dry so that you feel safe. The instruction is understandable and adapted to your individual needs. Take the time to ask questions.

The start – teamwork is required

The take-off is real teamwork between you and your pilot. With powerful walking steps, we first pull the paraglider up together until it stands above us and fills with air. At the command “Launch!” you accelerate downhill with bold, dynamic running steps. The glider develops lift and after a few meters you gently lift off the ground. After just five to eight steps, the paraglider carries you away – and suddenly your feet are floating freely in the air. An indescribable feeling!

The pleasure of flying & the feeling of freedom

Once you take off, you forget all your fears and tension. You sit safely and comfortably in the ergonomically shaped harness, almost like in an armchair in the air. The view sweeps over the foothills of the Alps, Neuschwanstein Castle and the surrounding mountain peaks. You enjoy the freedom like a bird and can easily talk to your pilot at any time – on a tandem flight, you are positioned close to each other. Your pilot will be happy to explain the landscape to you, show you flying techniques or adapt the flying style to your wishes.

Soft landing

Landing is easier than expected and usually very gentle. Depending on the wind conditions, we either land safely on our feet in a standing position – similar to after a small jump – or you land gently sitting in the softly padded harness. Your pilot will give you the command ‘feet up’ or ‘get up and walk’ in good time so that you are optimally prepared. After landing at the Tegelberg landing site directly in front of our base, you can let the experience sink in and look at the photos or videos.

9. arrival & parking

Good travel planning ensures a relaxed start to your flight experience. You can find all the important information here.

Directions by public transportation

Traveling by public transport is convenient and environmentally friendly. Bus routes 73 and 78 run regularly from Füssen train station in the direction of Tegelbergbahn. The buses take you directly to the ‘Schwangau Tegelbergbahn’ stop. From there, it is only a two-minute walk to our meeting point at the Tegelberg landing site. The bus connections are well timed, especially during the main season. You can find current timetables online or in the DB Navigator app. A day ticket for the region is recommended if you are planning several excursions.

Parking on the Tegelberg

There are plenty of paid parking spaces available directly on the Tegelberg, which are open daily from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm. The parking fees are moderate and are paid on site at machines – coins, cards and contactless payment are possible. The parking lots are located in the immediate vicinity of the Tegelbergbahn valley station and our meeting point. Please note that camping and overnight stays are not permitted in these parking areas. Motorhomes may park during the day, but must leave the parking lot in the evening.

Navigation & arrival by car

For navigation, enter ‘Tegelbergstraße 33, 87645 Schwangau’ or ‘Tegelbergbahn parking lot’ into your navigation system. Coming from Füssen, follow the main road B17 towards Austria and after a few kilometers turn right towards Tegelberg/Hohenschwangau. There are signs all the way. From Austria/Reutte, you can reach Tegelberg via the B179 and the border crossings. Plan a little buffer in the high season, as the access road can be overloaded when traffic is heavy.

10th spectator

Accompanying persons are very welcome. Here you can find out where they can best follow the experience.

Recommendation: FLY ROYAL base at the landing site

We recommend our FLY ROYAL Base & Landing Bar at the Tegelberg landing site to accompanying persons and spectators. With relaxing music, cold drinks, comfortable deckchairs and a breathtaking view of Neuschwanstein Castle, it’s a wonderful place to linger. At the same time, you have a perfect overview of the entire flying area. You can watch the paragliders fly, experience the landing directly and take spectacular photos and videos. The landing site is accessible free of charge and offers plenty of space.

Alternative: Tegelberg launch site

If you want to experience the exciting moment of take-off up close, you can take the Tegelbergbahn cable car up to the launch site. However, you should allow for longer waiting times at the cable car. While the pilot and his passenger can bypass the queue, accompanying persons must queue regularly. In high season – especially at weekends and in good weather – waiting times of up to an hour can occur. Plan accordingly and drive up much earlier so as not to miss the start.

Photo & video tips for viewers

You have the best opportunities for spectacular shots at the landing site. Position yourself at the edge of the landing area with a view of the Tegelberg – this way you can film the paragliders perfectly on approach and landing. A telephoto lens or the zoom function on your smartphone are helpful. Make sure that you are not standing directly in the landing area. At the take-off site, the possibilities are more limited as the take-off is very dynamic. Our professional photo and video service from the pilot’s perspective complements your shots perfectly.

11. opening hours

Our opening hours and availability at a glance.

FLY ROYAL Base & Landing Bar

Our base at the Tegelberg landing site (Tegelbergstraße 33, 87645 Schwangau) is always open in flying weather. As paragliding is weather-dependent, we cannot guarantee fixed opening hours. On days with good flying weather, we are usually on site from the morning until the early evening. The Landing Bar offers refreshments and a cozy atmosphere to relax. We look forward to your visit – whether as a passenger, spectator or simply as an interested party.

Telephone availability & online booking

You can reach us by phone daily from 9:00 to 18:00. Outside of these hours, you are welcome to leave a message on our answering machine or send us an email or WhatsApp message – we will get back to you as soon as possible. Our online booking platform with real-time calendar is available around the clock. Tickets and vouchers can be booked online 24/7, so you can plan flexibly and conveniently from home.

Flight operations & season

We fly daily in suitable weather – even on Sundays and public holidays. With up to five dates per day, we offer maximum flexibility for your flying experience, whether spontaneous or planned for the long term. Our peak season runs from the beginning of April to mid-October. The best flying conditions in the Allgäu prevail during this period. There are no regular flight operations from November to March, as the weather conditions and limited daylight hours do not reliably guarantee safe flight operations.

12. safety

Your safety is our top priority. We meet the highest standards and work with years of experience.

Certifications & regulatory standards

FLY ROYAL has all the necessary official permits for commercial tandem flight operations. Our flight school is certified by the German Hang Gliding Association (DHV) and is subject to regular inspections. We strictly adhere to all aviation regulations and safety guidelines. Our flight operations are covered by comprehensive insurance, including liability and accident insurance. The legally required liability insurance is already included in the flight price and protects you in the unlikely event of damage.

Pilot qualification & experience

All our tandem pilots have the highest level of license – the DHV tandem pilot license. This license requires extensive training, a minimum number of flying hours as well as regular further training and safety training. Our pilots collect hundreds of flying hours every year and know the Tegelberg flying area inside out. They are not only technically adept, but also trained and experienced in dealing with a wide variety of passengers – from children and senior citizens to people with special needs.

Material, maintenance & quality control

All our flying equipment comes from leading manufacturers and is maintained to the strictest quality standards. Every tandem paraglider regularly undergoes a comprehensive material and safety inspection by certified test centers. Harnesses, carabiners and rescue systems are visually inspected before each flight and fully checked at set intervals. Our equipment is serviced and replaced much more frequently than required by law. We focus on quality rather than maximum service life.

Emergency management & rescue systems

Every tandem harness is equipped with an emergency rescue system – an additional parachute that can be deployed immediately in the unlikely event of a main parachute malfunction. Our pilots regularly practice emergency scenarios in safety training and simulations. At the landing site, we work with an established emergency plan and are networked with the local emergency services. Paragliding is statistically one of the safest air sports – especially in professional tandem flight operations with experienced pilots and tested equipment, the risk is extremely low.

We look forward to your flight!
